How do I clean stainless steel pots and pans?

I have a stainless steel pot and pan set. They are very nice quality, but seem to hold onto a white film well. Also the bottoms of them get little brown spots. (I hang my pots on a pot rack over my island so the bottom look bad) How do I remedy this? Is there any homemade cleaners for this?

buy some SOS pads. they are very cheap and clean practically EVERYTHING off any surface very fast. as for homemade, im not sure that there are.
